INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT

James Blake’s “Unluck” plays in the background as a YOUNG MAN lays on his bed. He is illuminated by a string of Christmas lights haphazardly strewn across his makeshift shelf of Haruki Murakami novels and small Lego figures.

He lays under the covers, watching the lights, although they do not twinkle.

YOUNG MAN (V.O.)

I feel like I’m swimming in dirty water. Dirty with thoughts of you. The water seeps through my pores that are bullet holes in an armor not meant for gunfire, but perhaps more for sword fighting. I cannot take this armor off. The locks are fastened too tight. And I’m drowning.

A pack of Benson & Hedges Premium Cigarettes at his bedside reflects the light, giving the green and gold box a soft glow. He takes the pack and opens it, sniffing the contents with his eyes closed.

YOUNG MAN (CONT’D)

I’m starting to forget how to breathe.

He closes the box and places it back where it was. He stretches his arm further this time, towards the floor, and pulls a green plug. The lights flicker and die.
